Psychology of Materialism: Are you What You OWN?

Money, then more money and finally more cravings for more money.

Does money define who we are? Does our efforts in life matter? The growing culture of materialism around the globe has changed perceptions, influenced ideologies and created another class in the society, The wannabes. 

People are now evaluated by the size of their pockets, bank accounts and investments. This a good thing though. Saving for the dry season. why not?


But the problem comes in when we strive through thick and thin to paint a grim picture of a growing culture of materialism.  Researches have shown that those who pursue wealth and material possessions tend to be less satisfied and experience fewer positive emotions each day.

On the other hand, research has found that life satisfaction is correlated with having less materialistic values. Unbelievable Right?

Materialistic people tend to be competitive. They want to fit in even if they are to sell out their own happiness for material possessions. Why should someone pretend to be from  a posh neighborhood only to make somebody else satisfied. such people will rent apartments in high end neighborhoods,  take a loans to buy that new Lamborghini and struggle throughout the month to fit in.

You see, trying hard to fit into the 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians' Lifestyle usually turns out to be a total disappointment for some unknown reasons. I wish it worked. You can fool people on the social media platforms but deep down lies a sad & tired self trying so hard to be.

See, I also come from this school of thought that believes that a person is defined by what He/She does in life and the quality of life the person leads rather than the material possessions. 

Well, again we can argue that the quality of life is defined by their financial capabilities but that's a long topic for another day.

Today, lets agree to disagree that a person is not defined by what he/she owns but the quality of life lived and most importantly, their intellectual self.
