Well, it all depends on the angle we choose to look at it. With great literature intellects like Chinua Achebe, Ngugi wa Thiongo and many more, Africa succeeds to be among the richest continents on earth.
The colonial chiefs introduced westernization forcing Africans to adopt their lifestyle and look down on their down their own as backward and barbaric.
As a result, the African traditions and way of life that we so much valued got swept into the wind. We were forced to adopt new concepts in the name of colonialism. Our morals beliefs were replaced while the African spirit of communism lost its meaning.
" I used to like it growing up in the village where everything was communal. See, we were brought up with everyone in the village and the kind of respect and values instilled in us still remain a treasure to be valued up to date. This is to mean that there are some words that remained unspoken. And up to date, I still feel weird trying just to fit in the society. What choice do I have though?
Underdevelopment accompanied with extreme poverty has paralyzed development in African countries earning us an undesirable tag. However, despite all this predicaments, some countries like Rwanda have defied all odds and strongly started the aftermath process of smart city development in the artificial intelligence and internet of things age.
On the other hand, the quest for government integrity and transparency is a great starting point though not all nations have embarked on this. How can we expect to propagate forward with greed for personal development at the expense of other countries & people? Integrity is key.
Political instability follows soot. With Kenya leading on the fore front to beat corruption, much positivity is expected. This will ensure that the greed for power is quenched with service for people and that gradual economic growth enhanced.
Ethnic wars cannot be forgotten as they are the major setback to Africa’s development. Most countries are affected by the notorious negative ethnicity. Rwanda and Kenya are the recent victims of ethnicity. But the solid question remains: How did we get to this point?
With all these matters solved, African can rise above all heights and move past the low bar set by its colonial masters. Integrity implanted in African countries will save the inhabitants a great deal. This will improve most Africans views on their continent and promote the spirit of Africanism.
Meanwhile, I will be eagerly waiting by the riverside to sing along to my usual tune, '' Africa the Black land of Beauty.''
